Methods

Six ways to charge for the same item, again.

Run any combination of new, rental, resale, subscription, membership and trade-in from a single platform. Each product can have different methods enabled.

Calendar

One-off rentals between two dates. Customers book for a set number of days at a predetermined price — ideal for event wear, ski gear or occasion-based items. Add fixed fees like cleaning charges, configure logistics buffers between rentals, and let customers filter products by availability dates.

Stack on fixed fees for cleaning, restocking or insurance. Protect inventory with logistics buffers so items reset between bookings. Filter the catalogue by availability so customers only see what's free for their dates.

Calendar rental method

Subscription

Recurring access to a single product. Customers pay monthly until the item is returned, with a configurable minimum rental term. Great for high-value products like electronics, appliances or fitness equipment. Configure store-wide billing settings, attach deposits, and add legal disclaimers at checkout. Migrate existing Stripe subscriptions to bring an existing book of business with you.

Tune billing day, minimum term and grace periods through store-wide subscription settings. Show a checkout disclaimer so customers acknowledge the recurring commitment. Bring an existing book of business across with a Stripe migration — no churn, no re-signups.

Subscription method

Membership

Access to a catalogue of items for one recurring price. Customers swap items within an allowance using item or credit-based plans — perfect for childrenswear, maternity wear or fashion where needs change over time. Build plans at the store level, set credit costs per variant, and integrate with Shopify customer tags.

Price by item count or by spend with flexible credit systems. Build tiered membership plans with different allowances and benefits. Gate exclusive products and pricing using Shopify customer tags.

Membership method

Resale

Sell individual serialised items at condition-based prices. Monetise used, refurbished or end-of-lifecycle inventory while maintaining full item tracking. Run resale alongside any rental method on the same product, set different prices per condition, and offer customers the choice to rent or buy.

Price each unit by its item condition — pristine, used, refurbished — so resale prices reflect real-world wear without manual edits.

Resale method

Trade-in

Buy back products from customers in exchange for store credit. Recapture value from items already in the wild, bring inventory back into your ecosystem for resale, rental or refurbishment, and turn one-time customers into repeat ones.

Configure which products you'll accept and the credit on offer through trade-in product setup — items flow back into inventory ready to resale, rent or refurbish.

Trade-in method

New

Sell new product alongside rental and resale on the same product page. Inventory for new units is managed in Shopify, while Supercycle handles the circular methods on top — so customers can choose to buy new, rent, or pick up a pre-loved item without leaving the storefront.

Run new alongside any other method on the same SKU through new product setup — Shopify holds the new stock count, Supercycle handles the rest.

Frequently asked questions.

Can I run multiple methods on the same product?

Yes. Each product can have any combination of methods enabled — for example, you could offer calendar rental and resale on the same item. Supercycle manages availability and pricing independently for each method.

How does pricing work across methods?

Each method has its own pricing model. Calendar uses per-period pricing, subscription uses recurring billing, membership uses plan-based pricing, and resale uses condition-based pricing. You can configure all of these from a single product view.

Can customers switch between methods?

Customers choose their preferred method at checkout. They can rent an item on a calendar basis for one occasion and subscribe to a different item — it's all managed through a single storefront experience.

What happens when a rental item is returned?

Supercycle tracks the return, updates the item's condition and processing status, and makes it available for the next rental or resale. The full cycle is managed through the Supercycle admin or automated with Shopify Flow.
